Living on Numfor Island, the majority of the Fyarkin Group members’ livelihoods are farmers and fishermen. This group is very aware that preserving living resources on land, on the coast, and at sea is a necessity. For the sake of their survival.
Community elders, namely Mr. Berthus Rumbrawer and Mr. Eferth Rumbrawer, are among those who teach the principles of sustainable living. One of the methods practiced by the Fyarkin Group is planting new trees for vegetation regeneration in the surrounding villages. To name a few types of trees planted: coconut, areca nut, mangrove and so on.

In Saribi Village and Sub Mander Village, in the last two months Fyarkin has planted 65 coconut trees and 21 areca nut trees. The hottest news, on May 1st Fyarkin planted mangroves assisted by a group of children. This is a happy thing. Through this activity Fyarkin fosters awareness of the next generation regarding the importance of mangroves.
On the coast, mangroves are a home for fish and a place for fish to breed. This is in line with the supply needs of one of Fyarkin’s businesses, namely salted fish production. Of course, the other main role of mangroves is to protect the coast from abrasion and seawater intrusion, as well as playing a role in mitigating tsunami disasters.
Mangrove planting activities in Numfor have actually started since 2008. At that time, the activities were carried out ambitiously. The area of the coastal area planted reached seven hectares. Unfortunately, only a few mangroves survived to grow. Not giving up hope, in 2022 the Sub Mander Village and Saribi Village governments together with the village community and the Fyarkin Group planted another 1,000 mangrove trees. Misfortune cannot be avoided, again only a few mangroves survived to grow. The rest could not be saved. Then the Fyarkin Group changed the planting method. It was decided to plant mangroves in a 50mx50m planting area first. The process is slower by paying more attention to the unique characteristics of mangroves and continuing to care for them.
The Fyarkin Group is committed to maintaining and continuing the tradition of planting various trees in Numfor, despite facing various challenges, both natural and social challenges.
