Village Customary Forest”Haha”

By Yosua Majefat

Nice to meet you! I am Yosua Majefat, 25 years old. I live in Haha Village, Seremuk District, South Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua Province. I am a member of the Tival Community, a youth group that plays the role of guardian and protector of customary forests in Seremuk District.

Until now, Haha Village has a large forest. In it live several clans, such as the Klafle clan, the Kemesrar clan, the Majefat clan, and the Woloble clan. Each clan has its own customary forest and customary land.

The Tival Community routinely monitors the condition of the forest. I specifically do this in the customary forest of my own clan, the Majefat clan. When conducting the control, I observe the trees there, such as ironwood trees (merbau), matoa trees, kuku trees, sago plants, and the river that flows in our forest.

The good news is, since 2024, Seremuk District has pocketed the Decree (SK) of the Regent of South Sorong concerning the Recognition of the Protection and Respect of the Rights of Customary Law Communities and Customary Territories. With this SK, it is increasingly important for the people of Kampung Haha to jointly protect and preserve their forests and nature. For me, the land is our mother. The forest is our breath of life.

It is an absolute obligation for us, the younger generation, to be able to manage customary land, this source of livelihood. We will protect it for the sake of our dignified life.
