The distinctive working method that YP3SP applies in accompanying communities is the TFT (Training for Transformation) approach. This method was adopted from our partner in Kleinmond, South Africa. In principle, the method builds on the belief that effective change will occur when it comes from within oneself and is based on the capacities one already possesses.
As part of our facilitation process, one of the regular activities carried out is collective reflection. This is a process of contemplating, evaluating, and understanding progress, achievements, and aspirations, as well as the obstacles faced—both personal and collective within the community. This is usually conducted every three months and every six months, both for the community and for the facilitators.
On April 1, 2025, we met to carry out a collective reflection with the community in Alatep Village, Okaba District, Merauke Regency. From that reflection, one of the achievements of the Paia Community was their successful involvement and direct participation in the Malind Milah community theater. This theater performance, facilitated by the team from the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ), highlighted cultural values, identity, and fostered critical awareness within the Okaba District community.
In terms of aspirations, the Paia Community hopes to be able to build a group structure, maintain cooperation, and continue farming to meet the community’s food needs.
As for challenges, the Paia Community still experiences difficulties in making group decisions when formulating the next action plan. Despite this recognized obstacle, the Paia Community continues to persist to this day because of their willingness to take action and engage in reflection.
As a facilitator who works closely with them, I believe it is a vital foundation for transformation when a community has a shared dream and is committed to nurturing it together.
